Sondra F. Stallard, Ph.D.
President, Strayer University
Since joining Strayer University in 2007 as its 13th president, Sondra F. Stallard, Ph.D., has presided over the introduction of new degree programs, launch of a redesigned MBA degree and receipt of educational approval for expansion into new states.
During her tenure, Strayer University has introduced the associate and bachelor’s degrees in criminal justice, and the master of human resources, both in response to student and industry demand. The University also undertook a rigorous redesign of its signature MBA program, producing a customizable graduate business degree grounded in adult learning theory. In addition, Strayer University has received approval to open campuses in new states.
Before joining Strayer University, Dr. Stallard served for 32 years as an academician and leader at the University of Virginia. She served as dean of the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, in which role she created and implemented innovative programs for nontraditional students. She also led the development of a national award–winning reading education program, an executive development program, UVa’s first distance-learning credit courses, the National Criminal Justice Command College and the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical program.
Raised in West Virginia, Dr. Stallard was the first member of her family to attend college. She holds a bachelor’s degree in history and government from the West Virginia Institute of Technology in Montgomery, W.Va., a master’s degree in history from Morehead State University in Morehead, Ky., and a doctoral degree in education from the University of Virginia.
